Ladies and gentlemen,

Today, I’m honored to tell you some stories. Stories about the power of unity.

Imagine how you would feel if you had to leave your home forever, knowing that it would soon be submerged under water. That was the fate of Li Xiyan in August 2010. He locked his door for the last time, said goodbye to his house by the Danjiang River, and moved to the unfamiliar city of Zhengzhou. He was not alone. There were 165 thousand people like him, who had to leave their homes and start a new life elsewhere. Why did they do it? They did it for a noble cause: the South to North Water Division Project, a project that would bring water to millions of thirsty people in northern China.

The dream of this project began in 1952, when Chairman Mao first proposed the idea of “borrowing water from the South to the North”. Back then, some regions in northern China were suffering from severe droughts, crops were withering, and people’s lives were in danger.

From then on, the project started. For over 60 years, scientists and engineers devoted themselves to this mission, working tirelessly to ensure a feasible plan and a successful outcome. Local governments listened to all parties and coordinated their resources, clearing obstacles for the smooth progress of the project. And finally, in 2022, the project was completed and accepted.

This project was not easy. It required engineers, governments, and millions of citizens to work together as one team. It required unity. It was unity that made it possible. It was unity that raised the water by 40 meters. It was unity that solved the problems that had haunted China for thousands of years, moving forward on the path of modernization.

1.4 billion people united as one to achieve a national miracle. This is the story I want to share with you today, a story about the South to North Division Project, a story that happened on our path to modernization.

Let us remember this story as we face the challenges ahead. Let us remember that we are not alone, but part of a larger family. Let us remember that it is through unity that we can overcome any obstacle and create a better future for ourselves and our children. Thank you!
