In January 2023, the body of a 15-year-old boy, Hu Xinyu, was found near his school. He had been missing for 106 days. According to the police, he had repeatedly expressed suicidal tendencies before killing himself.

This event is a tragic and controversial case that has aroused widespread public attention and sympathy. It reflects the mental health problem of adolescents.

According to recent surveys, about 30% of Chinese teenagers display symptoms of mental health issues, and 12% suffer from depression.

For many, suicide is not meant to end life, but pain. The generational gap in values can cause serious misunderstandings, making adolescents feel lonely and hopeless. In addition, academic pressure is another factor that contribute to adolescent suicide. This explains why Hubei and Anhui provinces show higher risk of suicide.

To address the growing concerns, the Chinese government has been taking several measures. Investments in professional mental health services have been made, mental health education has been integrated into the school curriculum ,and numerous public campaigns have been implemented.

But these are far from enough. I hope that more efforts can be made to intervene in adolescent suicide, and to provide more support for young people in need. Thank you.
