In January 2021, Chen Xiaoping, a disabled woman fell from her wheelchair on her way home in Shenzhen city due to the lack of accessible facilities on the road. She was injured and died afterwards.
It was a tragedy, and also a catalyst that brings the disabled back to the public’s attention. People with disabilities in China are estimated to be around 83 million, accounting for about 6% of the total population. But you may seldom see them outside because of discrimination and imperfect facilities.
But situations have been getting better. From 2022 onwards, the Chinese government starts to promote the construction of accessible facilities in the integrated picture.
In the same year, OPPO, a smartphone manufacturer in China launched Smile Proposal worldwide, aiming to improve accessibility in technology. In 2023, a vlogger shared her successful experience of metro trip in Guangzhou. The meticulous and professional accessible service of Guangzhou Metro has won more than 300,000 likes on the video platform.
